From The Executive Director

Pressing On That spirit of “pressing on” reflects the example set by Mark Junkins (1958–2013) of McShan Lumber Company. I was fortunate to work with Mark on projects featuring Southern Pine lumber, and he was widely respected for his authenticity, character, and kindness. While our industry continues to face accelerating change from market shifts, regulation, and global uncertainty, our message remains clear: SFPA is pressing on, focused on promoting Southern Pine lumber with optimism and purpose while helping cultivate strong new relationships that endure beyond distractions.
That forward momentum is reflected in preparations already underway for Forest Products EXPO 2027, where exhibit space sales will open in May. The theme - Industry in Motion - speaks directly to where sawmilling is headed. Our industry is accelerating toward a more connected, automated, and responsive future. While change is constant, EXPO has remained a trusted gathering place since 1950, bringing together equipment suppliers, producers, and service providers to strengthen relationships and showcase solutions that move our industry forward. I encourage members and industry partners to begin planning early and to view EXPO not just as an event, but as an investment in staying competitive in a rapidly evolving environment.

Looking Ahead: Global Engagement & Strategic Priorities On the international front, American Softwoods’ participation in the Dubai Wood Show remains tentative. Traditionally, Dubai has been one of the most well‑attended trade events we participate in, drawing serious buyers from across the Middle East and offering substantial opportunities for Southern Pine exporters. However, regional instability has made travel increasingly difficult. On March 3, the U.S. State Department issued guidance advising U.S. citizens to reconsider travel to the United Arab Emirates due to threats of armed conflict and terrorism. At this time, it appears unlikely that this advisory will change in the near term. SFPA continues to coordinate closely with other U.S. trade groups participating in the event as we evaluate the most responsible and effective path forward.
Strategic planning remains a key priority as we actively develop the 2027 Unified Export Strategy (UES). This document provides the framework that determines funding levels and direction for our international promotion programs. Following increased funding in 2026 (made possible in part by the restructuring of our consultant presence in Mexico and South America), we are building on that progress. Looking ahead, 2027 funding requests will place greater emphasis on emerging regional markets while maintaining strong support for core SYP destinations such as Mexico and the Caribbean Basin. The goal is to balance stability with growth while positioning Southern Pine lumber for long‑term global success.
Later this week, I will attend the MSR Lumber Producers Council meeting as an invited speaker to discuss Southern Yellow Pine export markets. While export statistics are generally broad (rough, dressed, treated), the global marketplace tells a compelling story. My presentation will highlight how SYP is used around the world, how we are identifying new opportunities, and how regulations such as EUDR may shape future demand. With a record 22.7 billion board feet shipped globally in 2026, exports remain a vital component of our industry.
In short: The challenges before us are real, but so is the momentum. By staying engaged, adaptable, and focused on promotion and partnerships, SFPA will continue to advocate for Southern Pine lumber wherever markets exist. Our industry is in motion…and together, we are pressing on.

Southern Pine lumber shipments in January totaled 1.682 billion board feet (Bbf). 2% above December’s revised shipments of 1,645. January’s year to date shipments totaled 1.682 Bbf. January shipments are 3% below the year-to-date period in 2025, and 7% below the year-to-date period in 2024.

Cybersecurity Readiness Assessment
|
The Cybersecurity Readiness Assessment remains open, and we still need industry participation to ensure this project moves forward. SFPA is partnering with the Industrial Engineering Department to evaluate cybersecurity readiness across the forest products sector. If you haven’t already, please help us encourage a few companies to complete the survey.
The Mississippi State Department of Sustainable Bioproducts is using this assessment to pinpoint the specific digital threats our sector faces. The data will support a grant proposal to host a free workshop where we can provide companies with hands‑on training to address these emerging threats. The survey is straightforward—just 30 questions answered on a 1‑to‑5 scale. Large companies should complete both the Manager and Technician tabs, while small businesses only need to fill out the Small Company tab. The web link requires a name, email, and the message “Forest Products” to ensure confidence in data security.
